First of all don’t make things up and never just say “I don’t know”

Ask the interviewer to clarify the question. Sometimes when this is done you can figure out what is being asked and you are able to answer it.

Let the interviewer know what you do know.

Tell the interviewer ways that you can find out the answer. This lets the interviewer know that you are able to take initiative to problem solve and are honest.

There is nothing stopping you from doing a follow up after the interview with an email or telephone call, letting them know the answer you were stuck on and how the problem was resolved.
